Viewers will forgive a lot in a talking-head video. Odd skin tones and a muddy image are harder to forgive, because they make the person on screen look tired or unwell, and that undercuts everything they say.
Color correction and color grading are two steps
Correction fixes problems. It sets the white balance so whites look white, brings exposure to the right level and matches shots from different cameras.
Grading sets a look. Warmer for a friendly coaching channel, cleaner and cooler for a tech brand, richer contrast for a show with a cinematic feel. Grading only works after the correction is right.
What log footage is
Cinema cameras can record in a flat profile called log, such as Sony's S-Log3. Straight out of the camera it looks gray and washed out. That is on purpose: log keeps more detail in the highlights and shadows, so the editor has room to shape the image later.
Our founder led the edit on The Feedback Loop, a startup pitch show shot on Sony cinema cameras in S-Log3. Every episode and clip was graded from that flat footage, so faces held their detail under strong studio lights. You can see it in our case studies.
Five steps to natural skin tones
- Set white balance on something neutral, like a white wall or a gray card.
- Expose for the face first. The background can fall a little darker.
- Check skin on the vectorscope. Healthy skin of every tone sits close to the same line on the scope, often called the skin tone line.
- Lift the shadows gently so eyes do not look sunken.
- Match every shot in the video, and every video in the series, so the channel feels consistent.
When a phone video needs grading too
Phones record in a punchy, finished look. They still benefit from correction, especially indoors under mixed light, where one side of the face goes orange and the other goes blue. A few minutes of correction makes a phone recording look intentional.
Lighting still matters most
A soft light in front of you, slightly above eye level, solves more than any grade can. Put a window in front of you, never behind you. Then grading takes a good image and makes it great.
Color grading is included in every one of our monthly plans.
