How much does it cost to edit a VSL in 2026?

Editing a VSL (video sales letter) can cost anything from about $200 for a basic freelance gig to several thousand dollars for a fully produced, animated piece. Ours starts at $800, and the final number depends on the length of the video, how much footage you send and how much proof and graphics it needs.

Most editors do not publish VSL prices, which makes budgeting hard. This guide shows the numbers that are public, what you are paying for, and how to plan a budget for your offer.

What is a VSL, and why does the edit matter so much?

A VSL is a video that does the job of a sales page. It usually sits on a landing page or behind an ad, and it walks a viewer from a problem to your offer to a clear next step, like booking a call or buying.

That makes the edit different from a normal YouTube video. Every cut either keeps a buyer watching or loses them. The opening seconds decide whether anyone sees the offer at all. Pacing, captions and the moment the price or call to action appears all affect how many people book.

Coaches, consultants, clinics and course creators use VSLs most, because they sell something people need to understand and trust before they pay.

How long should a VSL be?

It depends on what you sell. In an October 2026 guide for coaches and creators, the editing agency Vidpros suggests 60 to 120 seconds for a top-of-funnel VSL, about five minutes for offers under $2,000, eight to twelve minutes for offers between $2,000 and $10,000, and fifteen minutes or more for high-ticket programs.

Length matters for price. A two minute VSL and a fifteen minute VSL are very different jobs, even if both are called a VSL.

What do freelancers charge to edit a VSL?

Public prices are scattered, but a few give a sense of the range:

  • Hourly rates. goLance's freelance rate guide, updated October 2026, puts junior video editors at $20 to $40 an hour, mid-level at $40 to $75, senior at $75 to $130 and experts at $130 to $220.
  • Per finished minute. One job listing for a direct-response VSL editor, updated September 30, 2026, offers $5 to $7 per finished minute for editors working in CapCut with AI voiceovers.
  • Per project. A comparison of VSL editors published in October 2026 found that most of the agencies it reviewed do not publish prices at all. One editor listed in it starts at $60 per video up to 10 minutes, with motion-heavy edits up to $400 for a 15 minute video.

At the other end, Sendspark's VSL guide estimates that agency-produced animated VSLs run roughly $5,000 to $50,000. That usually includes scripting, animation and production, not just the edit.

So the honest answer is that VSL editing is priced like any other editing: hours multiplied by a rate. The hours are what change.

Where do the hours go in a VSL edit?

For a talking-head VSL, the work usually includes:

  • Picking takes. Most VSLs are recorded in short sections with several takes each. Someone has to watch them all and choose the best delivery of every line.
  • Tightening. Removing pauses, restarts and filler so the video moves without feeling rushed.
  • The hook. Testing which opening line and first shot keep people watching. We wrote about this in what makes a hook work.
  • Captions. Many viewers start with the sound off, so every word goes on screen.
  • Proof on screen. Screenshots, results, before and after shots and credentials, placed where they back up what you are saying. Only proof you have permission to use.
  • Sound and color. Clean audio, level voice, music that sits underneath, and skin tones that look natural.
  • The offer section. Clear on-screen text for what is included, the price if you show it, and the next step.
  • Versions. A full version for the landing page and often shorter cut-downs for ads.

What pushes the price up or down?

  • Length. The biggest factor. A fifteen minute VSL has far more decisions in it than a two minute one.
  • Raw footage. An hour of takes for a ten minute video takes longer to sort than a clean recording.
  • Graphics and animation. Simple text is quick. Custom motion graphics and animated explainers add the most time.
  • Proof assets. If the editor has to find, clean up and lay out screenshots and testimonials you supply, that is extra work.
  • Ad cut-downs. Turning one VSL into several 30 to 60 second ads is a separate edit for each one.
  • AI voice versus your own face. A VSL built from stock footage and an AI voice is a different, often cheaper job than a filmed founder or doctor talking to camera. For coaches and clinics, a real person on camera is usually what builds trust.
  • Revisions. Ask how many rounds are included. Some low-cost gigs include one.

What does a VSL cost with us?

A VSL with us starts at $800. It is a video sales letter for your offer, cut to sell, and we can cut ads from it if you need them. Every video includes 4 revision rounds. The final price depends on length, footage and graphics, so we quote after seeing your script or raw files. See our full pricing.

If you also want to run the VSL as ads on Facebook and Instagram, our checklist for editing Meta and UGC ads covers what those shorter cuts need.

Everything we make is edited by people, not generated by a tool.

How should you budget for a VSL?

  1. Decide the length from your price point. A low-cost offer rarely needs fifteen minutes. A high-ticket program often does.
  2. Count the extra versions. One landing page video plus three ad cut-downs is four edits, not one.
  3. Plan for a second version. Many VSLs get re-cut once the first data comes in, often the hook and the first minute. Leave room in the budget for that.
  4. Record well to spend less. Good audio, steady framing and a few clean takes of each section save more editing time than anything else.

FAQ

Is a VSL the same as a video ad?
No. A VSL is usually longer and sits on a landing page, where the viewer has already clicked. An ad is short and has to stop someone scrolling. Many businesses cut several ads from one VSL.

Can I make a VSL with AI tools instead?
You can make a basic one with AI voice and stock footage, and some brands do. For coaches, doctors and founders selling trust, a real person on camera usually matters more than the savings.

What should I send my editor for a VSL?
Your script, all raw takes at full quality, any proof you have permission to show, your brand kit and two or three VSLs you like. Our guide on what to send your video editor has the full checklist.
